There has been much arguing and gnashing of teeth in the Healthcare argument. Much was made of the CBO assessment that many uninsured would be left out in the final tally of options being considered. One option that makes much sense in insuring the working poor however, deserves careful consideration. The expansion of Medicaid could fill this coverage vacuum.
(strange places in this months book post!... :D - promoted by poligirl)
This month's theme is "strange places", as the Admiral's booklist travels from Norway to Japan to South Africa, to Argentina (and strangely enough, to the Appalachian Trail of the far future as well. And no, I didn't plan it that way). We see WWI era Austria, Cold War era Britain, Existentialist France, and a couple of fantasy worlds, comic and tragic, that exist only in their authors' heads. Pack your bags if you wish and let me give you a guided tour of where I've been since school let out...
Hey all! Good to see everyone here this Wednesday night surfin' the Progressive Blue!

I've been trying to get settled in here in Louisiana and haven't had much time for the regular Twilights (they take quite a bit of time to do), so in lieu of the regular columns right now, I will make sure there is an open thread where everyone is welcome to congregate and post links and/or other stuff as well as just chatter about whatever's on their mind.
So, I'll start: So, now that we can thwart (theoretically) a filibuster to get a good health care bill, will we?

(some Kentucky politics... - promoted by poligirl)
As if we need to see any more proof of the complete and total failure Republican representation has been for the people of Kentucky in Washington, the numbers just keep rolling out. A study of 9 Kentucky counties, including my own of McCracken have been found to rely heavily on the high-interest "payday loans" to make ends meet.
This is a story of two countries. They are intertwined by the incredible differences they portray as well as the deeply shared mannerisms and likeness in certain policies that both have employed recently.
Those two countries are the United States of America and Iran.
That the government showed more fear than the people is nothing new to those of us living in the United States of America.
During the G.W. Bush/Dick Cheney administration, fear was the premise of our government. Exuding fear and projecting it upon the population of our country was the foundation of the administrations ability to cow Congress into starting Wars of Profit/Convenience. This was acheived by first using the attacks on the World Trade Center as a conduit to spew propaganda through their media tentacles to the general public that scared the pants off of the American people and had them clamoring to retaliate, consolidate and beg their Congressional representatives to save US!!
(roller coaster indeed!... - promoted by poligirl)
In the Healthcare debate roller-coaster two things the millions of Americans who voted on this issue in the last election really need right now is leadership and courage. The same forces that always seek to stop any real progress have arisen again and we need someone who will take them on and defeat them arena of public policy. We need our President to step to the plate now.
Disclaimer: I don't know what the hell I am doing, so this is not a How To. Actually, getting this done despite not knowing what the hell I am doing is kind of the point.
A couple of weeks ago, I finally got serious about trying to get my rear derailleur back into action (that's the thing that kicks the chain off one gear and onto another one). It had seized up during the winter, and while I got some rear gears back at that time, I was down to three speeds on the front derailleur again.
So I was trying the dry lube, working it in on all joints, working the derailleur mechanism, and cleaning off the crud it was bringing up. Except no matter how progress I seemed to make, when I went to shift it, it seized up again. And then another round.
Until the cable snapped.
Fudge, now I had to change the cable. So I hit the internet to try to see what is involved with changing the cable. One of the first hits I got told me that when a derailleur is sticking, its normally the cable rather than the derailleur mechanism.
Aha, that sounded right. Lesson One: check the intertubes for advice first, before getting started on a new job.
Hello there everyone! Good to see you here tonight surfin' the Progressive Blue! Welcome to the Monday Night Twilight!

I've been trying to get settled in here in Louisiana and haven't had much time for the regular Twilights, so for now there will be an open thread where everyone is welcome to congregate, post links 'n' things and/or just chatter about whatever's on their mind.
So I'll start: So the male, pale, and stale (h/t Katrina vanden Heuvel) faction of the Supreme Court used a little empathy in their decision about the white firefighter's lawsuit, but it's bad if Sotomayor has empathy?
If you're going to need Health Care anytime soon, make sure you don't "get" any of these more "costly" conditions:
breast cancer, lymphoma, pregnancy, or high blood pressure.
If you do, it will put you on the Insurer's Radar, for possible Policy Cancellation ...
Having the audacity of "Getting Sick", can instantly turn you into a "Bad Investment" for "Big Insurance" ... according to the latest info coming out of Senate Hearings into Insurance Company practices ...
(he'd rather sink us than Sanford... - promoted by poligirl)
Ah, Mitch McConnell. Leader of the Party that seeks to lecture you on "Christian Family Values" all while whisking away to exotic locations such as Buenos Aires or the mens room to engage in all sorts of sexual encounters. Of course they never mention how totally morally devoid they are when they are campaigning.
Question: What is a pre-existing condition exclusion period?
Answer: Insurance companies try to discourage people from waiting until they get sick in order to purchase health insurance. One way in which they do this is to impose pre-existing condition exclusion periods. This means that if you have a medical problem which exists at the time you enroll in or purchase your health insurance, the insurance company will deny all claims pertaining to this medical problem for a certain period of time.
